Sleeping can be difficult for people with autism. Are There Any Useful Bedtime Hints? Read this Article !
A good night's sleep is essential for a child's learning and
development. When young people do not get enough sleep, their mood, school
performance, health, and behavior suffer.
A lack of sleep can have far-reaching consequences for
children with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and
attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Sleep problems affect up to 80% of autistic children. Parents
commonly report dyssomnias (problems falling asleep), parasomnias (problems
waking up during the night), and early morning waking. If these issues are not
addressed properly, they tend to persist.
Sleep problems in autistic children can be effectively
addressed when the following sleep strategies are tailored to the children's
needs.
1.Establishing a regular bedtime and waking time;
2.Creating a safe,
comfortable sleeping environment (cool, quiet, dark, screen-free);
3.Adhering to a regular bedtime routine that is calm and
sleep-inducing;
4.Avoiding caffeine, electronic devices, and excitement before
bed;
5.Encouraging physical activity during the day and avoiding exercise one hour before bed.
